We all wish we could remain youthful and healthy forever. However, in reality, health and appearance change over time. And the concern is that these changes can occur more rapidly in some individuals, a phenomenon known as early aging. So, what are the causes of early aging?
1.What is Early Aging and What Are Its Common Characteristics?
1.1 What is Early Aging?
From a molecular perspective, the human body is filled with telomeres, which are parts of the DNA-protein structure at the ends of chromosomes. Telomeres help preserve genetic information, keeping you looking youthful and healthy. Some telomeres are lost each time a cell divides, although an enzyme called telomerase helps replenish them. Over time, telomeres naturally shorten with age, leading to damage and eventual death of your DNA.
This process is known as intrinsic aging (sometimes referred to as chronological aging). This process is unique to each individual because it is entirely tied to your genetics.
However, certain environmental and behavioral factors can accelerate the telomere shortening process, making DNA more vulnerable. This is known as extrinsic aging.
As a result, early aging can occur sooner than expected. Controllable factors such as stress, smoking, and sun exposure all play a role in accelerating a person’s extrinsic aging process.

1.2 What Are the Characteristics of Rapid Aging?
There are many signs that occur with early aging, but the most noticeable changes are in the skin and hair.
- Sun Spots
Sun spots, also known as age spots and liver spots, are flat spots on the skin caused by exposure to sunlight over many years. These pigmented spots can appear on your face, the back of your hands, or your forearms. Age spots tend to appear after the age of 40. People with lighter skin may notice the development of these spots earlier.
- Veiny Hand
Over time, structural proteins like collagen, which help maintain the shape of your skin, decrease, causing the outer layers of skin to become thinner. As a result, your hands may start to show more veins, appear thinner, and become more wrinkled. There are no objective figures for when hands start to look older, but most people tend to notice this in their late 30s and early 40s.
- Chest Pigmentation
Many people develop patches of discoloration on their chest as they age. Similar to sun spots, these areas of pigmentation can result from damage to your skin cells due to sun exposure. Other causes of pigmentation increase can include eczema or other skin conditions that damage melanin cells. There is no average age at which this skin condition commonly appears.
- Dry or Itchy Skin
As you age, your skin becomes thinner and more prone to dehydration, leading to increased dryness or itching over time. You may notice that your skin becomes drier and more prone to flaking as you approach your 40s.
- Wrinkles or Sagging
By the time you reach your 30s, your skin slows down collagen production, the protein that helps maintain skin shape. Collagen helps skin recover and stay plump. With less collagen, wrinkles and sagging become more noticeable. You might see this more prominently on your forehead or areas frequently exposed to sunlight.
2. Causes of Rapid and Early Aging
Aging is a natural process of life. However, many factors can accelerate the aging process and make it occur earlier. Causes of early aging include:
2.1 Smoking
Smoking is one of the primary causes of early aging. The toxins in cigarette smoke cause oxidative stress on your skin. This leads to dryness, wrinkles, and other signs of premature aging.
2.2 Exposure to Sunlight and Blue Light
Many skin issues arise from exposure to sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) rays accelerate skin aging beyond natural aging. Sunlight is responsible for 90% of visible changes in your skin. UV rays damage skin cells, contributing to early changes such as age spots and freckles. The risk of skin cancer also increases with regular sun exposure without adequate protection.
High-energy visible (HEV) light and infrared light account for the remaining 10% of skin changes. Blue light from electronic devices like smartphones and computers is a form of HEV light. While these types of light do not increase the risk of skin cancer, they affect collagen and skin elasticity.

2.3 Genetics
Genetics can also be a cause of early aging. There are some rare genetic conditions that can make you show signs of aging in childhood and early adolescence.
Werner syndrome affects 1 in 1 million people. It causes wrinkled skin, gray hair, and baldness to develop between the ages of 13 and 30. Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome is an even rarer condition, affecting 1 in 8 million infants. Children with this syndrome do not grow as quickly as other children their age. They also have thin limbs and baldness. The average lifespan of children with Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome is 13 years.
2.4 Unhealthy Lifestyle
Certain lifestyle habits can contribute to the appearance of aging signs more quickly, even if they are not the primary causes.
- Poor Sleep: Sleep gives your body the chance to refresh and regenerate cells. Poor sleep quality is linked to increased signs of aging and reduced skin barrier function.
- Unhealthy Diet: A poor diet can make you age faster. Consuming a lot of sugar and refined carbohydrates can harm your skin over time.
- Alcohol and Caffeine Consumption: Excessive alcohol intake can lead to dehydration. Over time, this dehydration can cause your skin to sag and lose its youthful appearance.
- Polluted Environment: Environmental pollutants can trigger or worsen pigmentation spots and wrinkles. Since your skin is directly exposed to the surrounding air, the skin barrier endures the effects of toxins and pollutants daily.
- Stress: A stressful lifestyle can trigger inflammatory responses in the body and harm your sleep habits. Stress hormones and inflammation can accelerate aging.
3. Tips to Prevent Premature Aging
Although aging is a natural process of the body with age, many factors can cause you to age faster. Therefore, preventing the risk factors mentioned above can help slow down the aging process. Here are some ways to prevent premature aging:
3.1 Use Sunscreen
Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day can help prevent early signs of aging. Additionally, wearing sunglasses, hats, and long-sleeve shirts when outdoors or in sunny environments can further protect your skin.
3.2 Ensure You Remove Makeup Before Bed
A good habit of removing makeup can help clean your skin, remove harmful agents, and prevent skin aging. Use warm water and a gentle, non-irritating cleanser to wash your face twice a day. Make sure your face is free of makeup, foundation, and other residues before going to bed.
3.3 Get Enough Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for all the organs in your body, including your skin and brain. Adhering to a sleep schedule helps your skin renew and regenerate daily.
3.4 Eat a Balanced Diet
A balanced diet ensures you get all the nutrients your body needs to produce healthy skin cells. To help prevent rapid aging, eat a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Avoid refined carbohydrates and saturated fats that can lead to weight gain and premature aging.
3.5 Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can cause wrinkles to appear faster. Therefore, drink 8 glasses of water daily to keep your body hydrated.

3.6 Increase Physical Activity
Daily exercise helps improve blood circulation and keeps the skin healthier. So, stay active and engage in activities like walking, running, swimming, yoga, and other forms of exercise every day.
3.7 Quit Smoking
By avoiding exposure to the toxins in cigarette smoke, your skin will have a chance to recover. A study found that participants who quit smoking noticed their skin looked younger after quitting.
3.8 Reduce Stress
Find stress-relief methods that work for you and make them a habit. Yoga, walking in nature, and meditation are all healthy coping mechanisms that have been shown to help the body slow down the aging process.
There are many causes of premature aging today, which can lead to feelings of insecurity and self-consciousness in life and interactions. Therefore, we need to take preventive measures against factors that cause premature aging. Remember that aging is a long process, so proactive health care is necessary to live a healthy, youthful, and long life.
