Diseases such as sleep apnea, hypothyroidism, cancer, multiple sclerosis, anxiety disorders, kidney disease, depression, diabetes, and fibromyalgia can all lead to fatigue. When these underlying conditions are detected and treated in time, the exhaustion and fatigue will gradually improve.

Can nutritional deficiencies cause energy depletion? The answer is definitely yes. Certain foods, when consumed at the wrong time, can exacerbate fatigue, such as caffeine or heavily processed and oily foods.

Deficiencies in important vitamins and minerals like B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, C, D, iron, and magnesium are among the most common “causes of energy depletion.” For instance, vitamin D deficiency affects over 50% of the global population, while about 12.5% suffer from iron deficiency anemia.

As people age, their ability to absorb vitamin B12, crucial for metabolism and oxygen supply, decreases, often leading to fatigue.

Being overweight is one of the most common “causes of energy depletion,” particularly as it increases the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. This can disrupt sleep, leading to daytime drowsiness and chronic fatigue. Additionally, obesity is closely linked to fatigue due to chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and depression.

Apart from medical conditions and external factors, certain daily habits can also contribute to energy depletion.

2.1. Excessive Caffeine Consumption

Although caffeine can help you feel more alert upon waking, few realize it can also deplete your energy.

Drinking too much coffee or other caffeinated beverages can negatively impact your sleep cycle, increasing the risk of insomnia, nighttime anxiety, frequent waking, and daytime sleepiness.

Moreover, consuming foods and drinks high in sugar can cause a sudden spike in blood sugar, affecting sleep quality and leading to insomnia, worsening your energy issues.

Sleep deprivation is one of the most prevalent habits and causes of energy depletion today. During sleep, the brain releases growth hormones to repair damaged cells.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society, adults should sleep at least seven hours per night. Uninterrupted sleep allows the brain to progress through the deep NREM and REM stages, essential for energy recovery.

However, “habits that drain energy,” such as sleeping in uncomfortable environments, stress, or illness, can disrupt sleep, leaving you tired and drowsy the next day. Difficulty falling or staying asleep often leads to prolonged insomnia.

3. Improving Habits that Affect Your Energy

To minimize the causes of energy depletion, you can implement some of the following strategies into your daily life.

Aim to sleep between seven to nine hours each night. Avoid caffeine, electronics, or exercise right before bedtime. Try to maintain a consistent sleep and wake schedule every day.

Limit alcohol consumption, especially in the evenings, or any time of day. If consumed, ensure it’s in moderation.

Practice a balanced diet and drink enough water to nourish your body and provide energy.

Some simple exercises you can do at home, such as yoga, mindfulness, meditation, and regular workouts, can help reduce stress and boost your energy.

Schedule regular health check-ups and blood tests to detect any abnormalities or deficiencies in your body.

Regular physical activity is essential for a healthy lifestyle. While it may seem like exercise tires you out, when done correctly, it can actually make you feel more energized. However, avoid over-exercising, as this can also be a cause of energy depletion.

Obesity is a common cause of energy depletion today, so managing your weight and regularly engaging in strength-training exercises is vital.

In modern life, recognizing and adjusting the habits and causes of energy depletion in the body is crucial. Factors such as lack of sleep, poor diet, stress, and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to prolonged fatigue. By changing your lifestyle, practicing positive habits, and taking better care of your health, you can not only improve your energy levels but also enhance your overall quality of life.
