6 Small Habits To Improve Mental Wellness

The popular psychology YouTube channel Psych2Go (with nearly 13 million subscribers) offers guidance on cultivating six small habits to improve mental health.

  1. Turn Difficult Situations into Light Ones:
Along with numerous other benefits, positivity has been shown to positively influence your outlook on life. Over time, practicing positivity can help change your mood and thinking during challenging times, fostering hope, optimism, and acceptance. It allows your thoughts to shift in a more positive direction, which can prevent negative emotions from escalating. This flexible mindset provides an opportunity to reflect on what has happened and consider what you can learn from the situation rather than worrying about why it occurred. Viewing challenges and difficulties as something beyond their surface appearance is a wonderful attitude to maintain in life and can help support your mental health.
  2. Practice Gratitude:
Many things in our lives are taken for granted, such as food, shelter, and even waking up each morning. While it may seem obvious that these things are important, it’s easy to forget to appreciate what we have. You might only express gratitude when you finally land your dream job or achieve a perfect test score. However, you may feel ungrateful and gloomy when faced with difficulties or thinking about what you lack. The truth is, there is always something to be grateful for. Studies even show that people who practice gratitude are happier and less likely to experience depression. Forming the habit of counting your blessings can significantly impact your attitude, confidence, outlook on life, and mental health.
  3. Connect with Nature:
What is your relationship with nature like? Do you notice and appreciate the natural environment around you? Being in nature can evoke countless positive emotions such as calmness, joy, creativity, and enhanced focus. Research indicates that individuals with a strong connection to nature tend to be happier in life and are more likely to report their lives as meaningful. Moreover, when you have a strong connection to nature, you are more inclined to engage in environmentally friendly behaviors like recycling or buying seasonal produce. A healthy environment leads to a healthy lifestyle and mental health.
  4. Meditate:
What comes to mind when you hear the word “meditation”? You might envision sitting still for long periods or picture Buddhist monks meditating. However, meditation is not limited to that. It’s something anyone from any background can practice. While there are various reasons someone might choose to meditate, the primary purpose is to help you become aware of your thoughts and feelings. The mindfulness achieved through meditation can help you become calmer, remind you to live in the present moment, and reduce negative emotions such as anxiety and stress. It can also help you identify any negative habits and thoughts you may have. Proper meditation is learned over time and requires practice, but you can start slowly by spending a few minutes each day sitting quietly, focusing on your breath, and observing your thoughts.
  5. Write Down Your Thoughts and Feelings:
Have you ever tried journaling? Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help clear your mind and provide better insight into your emotions. Similar to meditation, writing encourages mindfulness. During stressful times, jotting down any negative thoughts or feelings can help you identify the root causes of your feelings and find solutions. Being able to see your thoughts and feelings on paper can be enough for you to realize that things are not as bad as you think, as our emotions can easily exaggerate the stress of a situation. Whether in a fancy notebook or on a scrap of paper, forming the habit of writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you better understand your emotions, manage stress, and ultimately improve your mental health.
  6. Take Care of Your Body:
Physical health and mental health are two distinct states, yet they are closely interconnected. This means that if your physical health is neglected, your mental health is likely to be affected as well. Fortunately, good physical health can help maintain your mental well-being. Doing things like getting enough sleep each night, exercising regularly, and incorporating healthy foods into your diet can not only keep you disease-free but also improve your mood, confidence, energy levels, and more. When your physical health is taken care of, your mental health will naturally follow. Therefore, ensuring you meet your body’s needs is a great habit that can stabilize your mental health.
